In 1996, the moribund product category known as personal digital assistant, or PDA, sprang back to life. The resurrection was performed by inventor Jeff Hawkins and his marketing whiz partner, Donna Dubinsky. When their company, Palm Computing, Inc., launched its first two models, the Pilot 1000 and Pilot 5000, conventional wisdom had already dismissed the idea as hopeless: a burdensome technology in pursuit of an almost non-existent market.
